2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe with 312 hp maximum output revealed

BMW late Tuesday unveiled a significantly updated version of its 2 Series Gran Coupe, a compact sedan first introduced in 2019 as a 2020 model.

The updated version will go on sale next spring in the U.S. and will appear as a 2025 model. The changes are similar to the updated version of the related 1 Series hatchback, which debuted in June and is off-limits in this market.

Up front, the 2 Series Gran Coupe has a new look featuring slimmer headlights, a new grille pattern (an illuminated grille is available as an option), and a new lower fascia design. The rear also has a new design, with new taillights, lower fascia, and exhaust tips. In the U.S., the 2 Series Gran Coupe comes standard with the M Sport Exterior Design Package.

Inside, BMW's other compact cars, including the new 2024 X2 crossover that went on sale last year, feature a more modern cabin design with a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment screen. A large display panel integrating a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment screen is now located above the dash. A new center console has also been added, with controls that include a small knob for changing gears, as opposed to the traditional upright lever.

The infotainment system is powered by Google's Android operating system and is easier to use thanks to a Quick Select feature that provides quick access to frequently used functions. In addition, individually configurable graphics can be displayed on the infotainment screen instead of the standard navigation map view.

As for the mechanical changes, the focus was on sharpening the handling by increasing body stiffness and revising the suspension. These changes include new adjustable dampers with additional sleeves, a recalibrated anti-roll bar, and a 20% increase in the caster offset of the front wheels.

The U.S. market will be served by the 228 and M235 models: the 228 will be available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and powered by a 2.0-liter turbo four with 241 hp; the M235 will be available only with all-wheel drive and powered by a 2.0-liter turbo four with 312 hp. Both have a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

BMW estimates that the all-wheel-drive 228 accelerates from standstill to 60 mph in about 5.8 seconds; the M235 takes 4.7 seconds.

Production of the 2-Series Gran Coupe takes place at BMW's plant in Leipzig, Germany.

The all-wheel drive 228 and M235 will go on sale next March with prices starting at $42,775 and $50,675 respectively. The front-wheel drive 228 will go on sale in mid-2025, with prices starting at $40,775. All figures include a $1,175 destination charge.
