Latest Renault 4 debuts at the 2024 Paris Motor Show.

Renault unveiled its electric subcompact crossover, the 4 E-Tech, at the 2024 Paris Motor Show this week.

The crossover will serve as the spiritual successor to the popular Renault 4. Earlier this year, Renault also unveiled its latest 5 electric hatchback, another iconic model from the French brand's past reborn in the electric vehicle era.

The original 4, introduced in 1961 and sometimes referred to as the 4L, was in production for over 30 years and was offered in a variety of body styles, primarily as a four-door hatchback. However, the new 4 E-Tech (E-Tech is Renault's designation for EVs) is offered strictly as a crossover.

At 163 inches long, it is about 11 inches smaller than the latest Mini Countryman, with enough room for five passengers and nearly 15 cubic feet of storage space in the rear. On the dashboard, two digital screens serve as the instrument cluster and infotainment hub. The infotainment system has Google built in and includes a voice assistant.

Renault has confirmed that the 4 E-Tech uses the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance's CMF-B EV platform, which is used in the 5 E-Tech. However, Renault's platform version is a unique low-cost design, which Renault has named the AmpR Small.

For the 4 E-Tech, Renault will offer 40 kwh and 52 kwh battery options. The larger battery powers a front-mounted electric motor that delivers 148 hp peak power and 0-62 mph acceleration in 8.5 seconds. The smaller battery will be paired with a 121 hp motor, also front-mounted.

The battery is DC fast-charging compatible and can complete a 15-80% charge in about 30 minutes. With the larger battery, Renault estimates a range of 250 miles on the WLTP test cycle used overseas. If measured under the more rigorous EPA cycle, the figure is likely to be lower. The vehicle is capable of bidirectional charging and single-footed driving.

Sales of the 4 E-Tech and 5 E-Tech will begin next year in markets served by the French brand. A reservation process has been set up at dealerships for buyers who want to secure early production slots.
