2025 Lexus LX reveals new LX 700h Hybrid flagship

Lexus on Thursday introduced a new hybrid powertrain for its 2025 LX full-size SUV.

The hybrid powertrain will be available in the new flagship model, dubbed the LX 700h, and will consist of a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine and an electric motor located between the engine and the LX's standard 10-speed automatic transmission. The system consists of a combination of the two. Drive is provided to all four wheels via a four-wheel drive system with a two-speed transfer case.

Unlike other Lexus hybrids, the LX 700h's powertrain has a conventional starter motor and alternator. This is to ensure that the vehicle will function even if the hybrid system fails, which Lexus says is important when venturing out on distant trails.

Toyota's Tundra and Sequoia have the same powertrain, producing a total of 437 hp, while the Lexus LX 700h is rated at 457 hp and 583 lb-ft. The Toyota pickup and SUV are close cousins of the LX, sharing the same GA-F body-on-frame platform.

The current LX was introduced for the 2022 model year and is currently offered only in LX 600 guise. This model is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine with a maximum output of 409 hp.

Other changes made to the LX for 2025 include a new grade overtrail. Like the Overtrail grade available on the smaller GX, the LX Overtrail grade adds front and rear differential locks and 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires (also a first for the LX). Unique design details have also been added, including gloss black exterior accents, a Moon Desert exterior paint finish, and an interior color and trim theme called Monolith.

According to Lexus, the chassis has also been reinforced to accommodate the hybrid powertrain, which has the added benefit of increasing overall rigidity, resulting in improved steering feel and handling stability. Engine mounts have also been strengthened to accommodate the increased weight of the powertrain. Lexus also introduced a new crossmember and relocated the spare tire to accommodate the battery under the rear floor. In addition, the standard 12V auxiliary battery has been moved from the traditional engine bay to the side of the rear deck, and a new brace for the battery provides additional rigidity. The radiator support is also sturdier, and a sturdier instrument panel brace has been added.

According to Lexus, the new LX 700h will go on sale early in 2025. A phased rollout to various regions will begin later this year from the Yoshiwara plant in Japan.
