2024 BMW 4 Series spy shots

BMW is working on a facelift for the 4 Series lineup and it starts with the coupe.

The 2024 BMW 4 Series, which was spotted undergoing circuit testing at the Nürburgring, will join the lineup with a refreshed front and rear end, along with interior design changes and new interior technology.

The last redesign debuted on the 2021 4 Series, so this will be a mild mid-cycle update. In spy shots, only the front and rear ends are covered in camouflage, with emphasis on the headlights, taillights, and rear diffuser area. The headlights feature more angular daytime running lights, with vertical elements integrated into the headlights. The rear diffuser is more pronounced, and M Sport models are fitted with M4-like mirrors.

What remains unchanged is the enormous and controversial kidney grille.

BMW engineers and test drivers covered the dashboard, making it invisible to spy photographers when parked. The latest BMW iDrive infotainment system will be combined with a digital meter cluster under a curved screen above the dashboard. Few buttons will remain, but the volume knob should remain.

The 4 Series will continue to be built on BMW's CLAR platform, but will be shorter, longer, and taller than its 3 Series sedan sibling.

The base model is expected to continue to be powered by a 2.0-liter turbo four that delivers approximately 255 hp and 294 lb-ft of torque. The more powerful M440i model will be powered by a 3.0-liter turbo six and a mild hybrid system (maximum output of approximately 382 hp and maximum torque of 364 lb-ft). The mild hybrid system integrates a starter motor and generator, which recovers energy during braking.

BMW M executives have already confirmed that dual-clutch automatic and manual transmissions will be discontinued within the lineup, including M-exclusive models. The current 4 Series is only available with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and that will not change with the upcoming refresh.

The electric i4 model, 4 Series Convertible, and M4 models will then be refreshed as BMW updates its entire 4 Series lineup.
