It's not just the pedestrian version of the BMW 4 Series that is about to get a facelift.

A refreshed 2025 BMW M4 coupe was spotted undergoing high-speed circuit testing at the Nürburgring. Like the 2024 BMW 4 Series that precedes it, the updated M4 will feature minimal changes, with updates to the front and rear end and interior technology.

The current 2022 M4 debuted in 2021 with controversial tall and skinny twin kidney grilles. Prototypes reveal that these grilles are not going anywhere. Updates seem to be limited to the headlights and possibly the hood. The inner lightning elements appear to be more upright, as on the 2024 5 Series sedan. The front quarters of the prototype hood were covered with camouflage, so it is not known if the dimples of the current model remain. The rear end is similar, with modified taillights.

Inside, the dashboard is covered and not visible through the spy cameraman's lens; BMW's latest iDrive infotainment system is connected to a digital meter cluster and touchscreen under a single sheet of curved glass similar to the XM crossover SUV Expect it to be connected to the touchscreen interface, which, like the 2023 3 Series, will do away with most buttons, relegating all but the volume knob to the touchscreen interface.

The M4 will continue to be powered by the S58 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6, but its output is unknown. The current Competition model has 503 hp, but the CLS model has 543 hp thanks to increased boost and engine mapping changes. Torque may increase slightly to 479 lb-ft.

Most models will continue to use xDrive all-wheel drive, but rear-wheel drive models should also survive for the time being. all xDrive-equipped M4s will use an 8-speed automatic transmission, while rear-wheel drive models will have a non-competitive 6-speed manual transmission will be available; BMW M executives have confirmed that the manual transmission will be discontinued, but expect it to continue in this mid-cycle update and be discontinued in the next-generation M4, which will arrive later in the decade.

The M4 convertible will return, although no test runs have been spotted yet.
