BMW Announces Limited Edition Skytop V-8 Roadster

The Concept Skytop, which BMW unveiled at the 2024 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in Italy in May, will go into production, BMW announced Friday.

Only 50 units are planned, and all production slots have already been filled. Pricing has not been announced.

The Skytop will likely be based on the 8 Series Convertible platform, and BMW has confirmed that it will be powered by the same 617-horsepower twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 as the M8 Competition Convertible.

However, not a single body panel will be shared with the 8 Series. Instead, the two-seater Skytop features a unique design inspired by past open-top BMW icons such as the 503, 507, and Z8. The Skytop also does not have a traditional convertible roof, but instead features a targa design with a roof panel that must be removed manually.

BMW produced its latest 3.0 CSL, based on the 4 Series platform, in a limited run of 50 units just last year, and BMW design chief Adrian Van Hooydonk said at the Skytop launch that BMW may undertake a similar project in the future. He stated that there is a possibility that BMW may do a similar project in the future.

While it has been common practice for years for exotic brands like Ferrari and Rolls-Royce to use existing platforms to create limited production models, mainstream luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz have recently begun exploring the possibility of have been exploring the possibilities. Mercedes is planning a series of limited production models it calls the Mythos series, the first member of which will be a Speedster based on the SL-Class convertible platform.
