New Mazda6 to go on sale in China this year

While it remains to be seen whether Mazda will replace its 6 midsize sedan, the automaker has a new offering in the segment in China.

Mazda unveiled the rear-wheel-drive EZ-6 at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show on Thursday. The attractive sedan was jointly developed by Mazda and its Chinese partner Changan Automobile and is expected to go on sale in China by the end of the year. Sales in other markets have not been announced.

Buyers will be able to choose between plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains, the latter offering an ideal 50:50 front/rear weight distribution and a range of 373 miles in the test cycle used in China. Calculated on the more rigorous EPA cycle, this figure is somewhat lower.

The EZ-6 is 193.7 inches long, about 4.5 inches longer than the previous Mazda6. Mazda has not revealed what platform the EZ-6 uses, but Chinese media reports that the EZ-6 shares a platform with a Changan sedan called the SL03. Mazda has confirmed that Changan was responsible for developing the EZ-6's powertrain and connectivity features.

The exterior and interior were designed by Mazda designers. Mazda said the EZ-6 represents the latest evolution of its "Kodo" design language.

The cabin is clean and uncluttered, typical of modern Mazda. Physical controls appear to be limited due to the large, sideways-facing touchscreen. Gesture and voice controls are also available, the latter functioning when the driver is outside the vehicle, for example during remote parking operations.

Mazda also premiered an electric crossover concept, the Arata, at the Beijing Motor Show. Mazda said the concept explores new design themes for future electric vehicles aimed at Chinese consumers.

A production version, again using Changan EV technology, is expected to go on sale in the Chinese market next year.
