Volvo's Next EVs Reportedly Subcompact Crossover and Midsize Sedan

Volvo plans to unveil an electric car on November 9 to replace its XC90 midsize SUV.

Stephen Connor, head of Volvo's Australian division, told Drive in an interview published Monday.

One will be an electric crossover smaller than the XC40 compact crossover, and the other will be a sedan, a mid-size sedan in the same segment as the Volvo S90, according to Drive. Both are expected to be available by the end of 2024.

Currently Volvo's smallest models are the XC40 and the related C40 Recharge. However, Hakan Samuelsson, Volvo's former CEO, stated at the time of the C40 Recharge's unveiling that the company was planning a model that would sit below the 40 series.

The new Volvo baby crossover may be named EX30, which Volvo has trademarked. It is expected to be based on the SEA modular EV platform from Volvo's parent company, Geely Automobile. The platform debuted last year in the 001 hot hatch from the same Geely brand, the Zeekr, and features an 800-volt electric system for fast charging.

The smaller Volvo will likely be built in China to keep costs down. Geely Automobile has built a state-of-the-art plant in Ningbo, on China's coast, for the production of sea-based vehicles.

As for the sedan, it may use a version of the aluminum-heavy platform developed by Polestar, another Geely brand, for its Polestar 5 sedan, due to be launched in 2024. Volvo's electric sedan is expected to be given the name ES and a number indicating its size and positioning. The mid-size sedan is expected to be called the ES90.
