Nissan to Unveil Electric GT-R at 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon

Nissan will unveil the electrification of its R32-generation Skyline GT-R sports car at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon next month.

The project has been underway since early 2023, led by a team of volunteer Nissan engineers. The idea was born out of the engineers' eagerness to add electrification to the R32 GT-R and integrate EV technology to recreate the car's appeal for a new generation.

Nissan has not revealed details about the EV technology used in the conversion, but one can imagine that the all-wheel drive system would have been retained.

It is possible that Nissan will eventually offer an EV conversion for the R32 GT-R and its successor. Nissan's Nismo division has offered replacement parts for the classic GT-R in recent years to keep the GT-R running.

Nissan has also suggested that the next generation of the GT-R, the R36, could be electrified. The final configuration of the car has yet to be determined, but engineers have stated that it will utilize some of Nissan's developments in Formula E racing. Nissan also unveiled the Hyperforce EV concept at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show. Although the concept was not called the GT-R, its design was a clear evolution of the current R35 GT-R's styling, with four sets of strobe taillights and a pixelated badge that blurred the iconic GT-R badge.

While the wait for the R36 GT-R may be years away, the R35 will end with the 2024 model year. Nissan is offering several special editions to mark the end of its 16-year run.

The Tokyo Auto Salon, a tuner's festival comparable in scale to the annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas, will be held January 10-12 at Makuhari Messe in Tokyo.
