2024 Launch of the Toyota Tacoma medium-duty pickup truck.

On Thursday, the automaker posted on its Instagram about the 2024 Toyota Tacoma.

The post itself does not confirm that this is indeed the updated 2024 Tacoma, but the darkened image shows the caption "Lost in the stars...".

The image shows the pickup truck, as well as the caption "Lost in the stars. #LetsGoPlaces" The outline of the pickup truck does not match the latest Tundra model. It looks like a leaked patent drawing of the 2024 Tacoma, right down to the spoiler attached to the rear of the cab.

The Tacoma 2024 is expected to debut later this year, and appear in dealerships by the end of the year.

The 2024 will be the first true redesign in a long time, as several current components under the truck's metal shell are more than a decade old. [The new platform will feature a new rear suspension that will be less likely to twist the frame when traveling off-road due to its higher torsional stiffness.

Two powertrain options are envisioned. Both will be equipped with gas engines, and one will be electric. Under the hood of the base vehicle is expected to be a 2.4-liter turbo four borrowed from the parts bin of the Toyota Highlander crossover, while on the Tacoma it will be positioned longitudinally. On the Highlander, this engine will produce 265 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque and will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The top engine is expected to be an electrified version of this engine with one additional electric motor. A similar powertrain on the Lexus RX 500h develops a maximum output of 366 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque.

Finally, an electric version of the new Tacoma will be offered in the future.

The design of the new Tacoma will be a clear evolution of the current vehicle. Features such as headlights, grille, fenders, cutouts in the bumper to provide entry and exit angles, and taillights will be more pronounced, much like the larger full-size Tundra. Fans expecting a design revolution will be disappointed, but those who like the truck's current design should be pleased.

The new 4Runner SUV will follow the Tacoma and share a common suspension.
