Integrating electric vehicle charging into the Google Maps update.

Thanks to new features such as power level information for public chargers and route planning that incorporates charging stops, EV drivers now have more functionality available from Google Maps.

According to a Google blog post, as part of a recent update, Maps now distinguishes chargers with power levels above 150kw with a "very fast" filter. For cars with Google built-ins, where Google has access to charging status information, the best charging stations are also suggested.

Brands that currently offer Google Built-In on at least some models include Polestar, Volvo, Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Honda, Ford, and Renault. This uses Google's ecosystem of apps as the default for the vehicle's infotainment system, replacing Maps with a generic navigation app, for example. This is a deeper integration than Android Auto, which simply displays cell phone content on the car's display screen.

In the US, specific EV models with Google built in include Cadillac's Lyriq, GMC's Hummer EV, Polestar 2, and Volvo's XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge. With this additional feature, drivers of these EVs should be directed to the fastest nearby charger, eliminating the need to look through a list of chargers or browse multiple apps.

This update should be a major step forward in improving the Google Maps user experience for EV drivers. Google added EV charging locations in 2018, stating at the time that it would display available connector types, power levels, and prices via Maps. At the time, however, that information was not displayed for all products and platforms.

Now Google states that it has also added charging information to point-of-interest search results. For example, a search for a supermarket will now show supermarkets that have charging facilities on site. The company also discussed new ways for smartphone users to find charging stations. According to Google, this will be offered on both Android and iOS.
