Apple CarPlay can now be added to more classic Porsches

For several years, Porsche has offered retrofit upgrades for classic models that add modern conveniences, such as navigation and an entire infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.

Previously, such systems were limited to 911s from the early 1960s through the 996 generation and certain front- and mid-engine sports cars. But on Thursday, Porsche announced a new version that will support even more models. It is priced at $1,475.99.

The new system supports 997-generation 911s from 2005 to 2008 and 987-generation Boxsters and Caymans from the same years. It also supports the first generation Cayennes from the 2003-2008 model years.

For the first time, Porsche is also offering region-specific systems. For example, the system for the U.S. and Canada supports satellite radio and maps with Porsche-specific points of interest.

The dual-DIN system features a 7.0-inch touchscreen and exterior panels designed to match the interior of compatible models. It does not affect existing components such as amplifiers, speakers, or antennas, and the navigation display in the instrument cluster, available on some models, will continue to function as originally designed.

Of importance to many buyers is the system's ability to use Apple CarPlay (iPhone 5 or later) and Android Auto for media playback, navigation, and calls.

In the case of Apple CarPlay, this system may eventually dominate the entire dashboard of a currently unspecified vehicle. Last summer, Apple previewed a next-generation version of CarPlay that would display its own information on the instrument cluster as well as the infotainment screen. So far, no automaker has said it plans this integration.
