Mercedes-Benz was spotted testing a compact electric sedan with coupe-like styling.

The name has not been revealed, but if Mercedes follows the current naming convention, the sedan may be called the EQA. If so, the current EQA compact electric crossover sold abroad would need to be rebranded as the EQA SUV, which will likely happen next year when the current EQA is updated with the related GLA-Class.

The prototype is believed to be the first tester based on the next-generation platform for compact cars called MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture).

The MMA platform will support both hybrid and fully electric powertrains and will be the last time Mercedes will accept internal combustion engines. Mercedes aims to be fully electric by 2030, and all future platforms will be dedicated to EVs.

The first model of the MMA platform is expected around 2025, most likely this sedan. This platform will eventually be used for all Mercedes models up to the C-class segment. On top of it will be the MB.EA platform for medium and large models, the AMG.EA platform for AMG's high-performance models, and the Van.EA platform for light commercial vehicles.

Although the prototype is heavily camouflaged, the styling cues appear to resemble current Mercedes themes. Some of the Vision EQXX's technology should make its way into the new sedan, as will its highly efficient energy recovery system.

The sedan will be part of a streamlined, compact range that Mercedes calls Entry Luxury (further up are Core Luxury and Top End Luxury). Other models in the Entry Luxury group are expected to include the CLA-Class, CLA-Class Shooting Brake, GLA-Class, and GLB-Class, all of which will likely have electric options with EQ badging, although the EQ naming convention is rumored to be on the way out.

The current A-Class and B-Class are expected to be phased out in order to focus on more profitable luxury vehicles; the A-Class has already been discontinued in the U.S.

The B-Class is expected to be phased out in order to focus on more profitable luxury vehicles.
