Sixth-Generation Mustangs Shortened for 2023; Shelby GT500 Lost

Ford's current Mustang will last one more model year, but not the fire-breathing Shelby GT500.

This information was first reported Wednesday by Muscle Cars and Trucks and has since been confirmed to Motor Authority by Ford spokesman Mike Levine.

The current Mustang will finally retire for a shortened 2023 model year to make way for the redesigned 2024 Mustang, which was unveiled Wednesday at the 2022 Detroit Auto Show. The current model will continue to offer the Mach 1, a new range-topping alternative to the Shelby GT500.

Ford has not revealed when production of the current car will end, but we do know that a redesigned car will be available next summer. Jim Owens, marketing manager for Ford Performance, told Muscle Cars and Trucks that Ford is still busy catching up with production of the 2022 Mustang due to various production setbacks last year and that there is still plenty of demand for the current car He stated.

While the Shelby GT500 (and GT350) are likely to return, there may be a gap of several years, as Shelby variants of the Mustang are typically not available at launch. In other words, if you are planning to buy a Shelby GT500, now is the time to do so.

Even if you wait for the arrival of the redesigned Mustang, it will offer plenty of performance right out of the box thanks to the new dark horse model that will replace the Mach 1. It will share the same 5.0-liter V-8 engine as the Mustang GT, but the output will increase to about 500 hp.
