Volkswagen ID.Aero Concept Unveiled, Teases Electric Sedan for U.S. Market

Volkswagen has just unveiled the 2024 ID.Buzz, but is already close to revealing another member of its growing ID family of electric vehicles, a mid-size sedan that will go on sale in the United States in 2023.

The sedan will replace the Passat, which will cease production after 2022, and will likely be called the ID.6. A prototype has already been spotted testing (see below).

The new ID.Aero concept car unveiled by VW on Monday strongly suggests the appearance of a sedan. Its fastback shape gives it an aerodynamic drag coefficient of just 0.23 Cd, and a subtle rear spoiler helps with stability. The overall length of the car is nearly 16.4 feet, which, coupled with the flat floor, should provide a spacious cabin.

If you think the ID.Aero looks familiar, you're right. This concept is an evolution of the ID.Vizzion concept unveiled in 2018; don't be surprised if a production version of the ID.Aero appears in wagon guise, as VW has announced a wagon concept for the ID.Vizzion Space in 2019.

The ID.Aero will be backed by Volkswagen Group's MEB platform for mainstream EVs and will be powered by a 77-kilowatt-hour battery that VW estimates will deliver a range of over 300 miles. The production version is expected to offer multiple battery options.

As noted above, the production version of the ID.Aero will replace the Passat and may replace the Arteon.

Production for most markets will take place at the VW Group plant in Emden, Germany VW also plans to produce MEB-based vehicles at the VW Group plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, meaning that production could also take place here VW plans to produce the ID. is also reportedly considering producing the Buzz here.

Other EVs that VW is known to be working on include the ID.8 mid-size SUV, the next generation Tiguan EV, a subcompact, and Scout branded SUV and pickup models.
