A preview of DeLorean electric cars ahead of the May 31 release.

A modern version of the DeLorean is in the works.

The project is headed by DeLorean Motor Company, which confirmed via Twitter on Thursday that its EV will be unveiled online on May 31. Fans can also register on the DeLorean website to see a sneak peek 24 hours in advance. The teaser shot included in the tweet reconfirms that the rear window will be louvered and designed with full-width LED taillights. The DeLorean's name will be backlit on the rear end.

In April, DeLorean tweeted a clearer shot (below) and stated that the actual car would be revealed on August 18. The reveal will take place at the 2022 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance awards ramp before the car is displayed on the Concept Lawn on August 21.

The name will also be revealed at Pebble Beach. DeLorean marketing chief Troy Beets told Motor Authority in March that it will not be called the DMC-12.

DeLorean is currently in the midst of a second round of financing. The company needs more funds to accomplish its larger plans, Beets told MA. CEO Joost de Vries told MA that the company plans to eventually go public, but did not say when.

De Vries told MA that the new car will have a range of over 300 miles, a battery pack of over 100 kilowatt-hours, and a fast-charge rate of about 150 kilowatts. Beets said it will be all-wheel drive and will likely have at least two motors. We also know that it will feature gullwing doors like the DMC-12.

The design will be by Italdesign, and some of the engineering will be set based on a new chassis with structural carbon fiber tubs.

The new DeLorean EV is expected to be priced between $150,000 and $200,000, with deliveries to customers likely to begin in 2023. Stay tuned.
