Only two Corvette ZR2 convertibles were built and will be auctioned off.

A 1971 Chevrolet Corvette ZR2 convertible, one of only two built, will be offered at Mecum's Indianapolis auction this May.

The RPO ZR2 Special Purpose LS6 Engine Package (the official name), which quietly replaced the race-winning L88 Corvette, is a C3 Corvette with a 454 cubic-inch big-block V-8 engine with 425 horsepower . That power is sent to the rear wheels via a Muncie M22 close-ratio "rock crusher" 4-speed manual transmission.

Other features included transistorized ignition, high-capacity aluminum radiator with shrouded delete, heavy-duty power disc brakes, model-specific springs, shocks, and F41 suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars.

Painted in Brands Hatch Green with a black leather interior, the car also features a color-matched removable hardtop in addition to the standard black convertible top.

Due to the high purchase price, only 12 ZR2 Corvettes were built, two of which were convertibles. This car also has the lowest mileage of any ZR2 in existence, with only 8,702 miles, according to the auction listing. It is also original and unrestored, and has won numerous awards over the years.

Because of its rarity and originality, Mecum expects this ZR2 convertible to sell for between $1 million and $1.2 million; at the 2021 Mecum auction, a numbers-matching 1967 Corvette L88 was one of 20 cars to sell for $2.7 It was sold for $2.7 million. Another L88 of the same vintage sold for $3.4 million at a 2013 Mecum auction, exceeding the pre-listing estimate in both cases. It would not be surprising if this ZR2 convertible did the same.
