MG Cyberstar electric sports car concept with 500 miles of range.

MG sells a lineup of crossovers and sedans today, but the historic British brand is best known for its vivacious 20th-century roadsters, like the MG TF and the cult-favorite MG B.

The MG TF is the first roadster to be released in the United States, and the MG B is the first of its kind.

On Thursday, MG previewed a concept it plans to unveil at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show later this month that hints at a return to its roadster roots.

The new concept is called the Cyberstar and is a battery-powered two-door roadster; MG has not revealed details, but says it will feature 5G connectivity, 0-62 mph acceleration in under 3 seconds, and a 500-mile range battery. It should be noted that this range estimate is based on a test cycle used outside the U.S. and would likely be lower based on EPA methodology.

The concept uses LED technology to simulate the round headlights of MG's classic roadster, while the rear has a bold cam tail shape and taillights with a Union Jack-like design that was introduced by fellow British brand Mini on its own cars. A single shot of the interior shows a very futuristic design that appears to rely on a driver's palm scan as a security feature.

Will the Cyberstar be commercially available? Last we heard, MG is planning to launch an electric sports car this year, but it will be a coupe, not a roadster.

More details on the concept, and perhaps MG's future sports car plans, will be revealed after its debut at the Shanghai Motor Show on the 21st. Stay tuned.
